Tech Check 09/08/05 - Digital Pictures part 2
Two weeks ago, we began what will end up being a three part series on digital photography, last week we focused on the Katrina situation, and this week we take a look at what to do with your digital pictures.

Sam talked about Picasa, a free digital picture editor and sorter available from Google. Picasa is easy to use, and makes adding pictures to a blog very easy in conjunction with Hello. To download Picasa, click here. For an example of pages that use Picasa and Hello together to display pictures, check out our personal blogs: Sam's Blog......Chase and Janet's blog

I talked about Flickr, which is a free and easy to use photo sharing site. If you have a lot of pictures that you want to share with friends and relatives, you can upload them to Flickr, and send your friends the link. Flickr is very easy to use, and will resize your pictures to make them easy to view online. You can also use Flickr in conjunction with your blog, as our friend Jeremy Flint does, and as the youth group at our church does: CahabaYouth.com (click to visit)

You can also get your digital pictures printed at a surprisingly good cost. The cheapest we've found is Winkflash (click here), which is offering an introductory price of 8 cents per print, plus 99 cents shipping - not bad. (we haven't tried them yet) Walmart has pretty good deal as well - Upload your pictures to the Walmart Photo Center, and then pick them up an hour later at a Walmart near you! Very convenient, but a bit pricier at 19 cents per print.

Finally we recommend you store your pictures on Optical Media like a Cd or DVD. Cd's are better than DVD's because they are more sturdy, and tend to hold up better over the years. Don't skimp either - buy brand name disks to ensure that you get good quality.

Next week - Printing tips that will save you time and money, and help you preserve your important pictures. Thanks for watching Tech Check! Internet coverage of Katrina.
What a disaster Hurricane Katrina is turning out to be! Tonight's Tech Check was on ways to track this particular disaster, and can also help you dig deeper for future big news events. Here are the links we mentioned, along with a few others worth your while. Please note that blogs are a bit different than big news websites, and may contain objectionable language or content. We make every effort here to only link to things that would be family friendly, but be cautious nonetheless.

First off, Foxnews has several good photo and video streams, as well as a lot of fresh hurricane news.

Our local Fox affiliate, WBRC, has links to several disaster aid organizations that you may donate to.

Other sites mentioned:
Eyes on Katrina - Blog maintained by a local Mississippi newspaper's staff

Dancing with Katrina - Maintained by a couple of Gulfport Mississippi guys who rode out the storm. (keeping in mind the above blog warning - read the comments on these posts to get information, and get an idea what people are going through in this area.)

Technorati - The Blog search and indexing site: search for Katrina to find over 70,000 blog postings on the subject, arranged by newest first.

Flickr - A photo indexing site - search on Katrina to find over 3,000 photos, many you won't see on the news. (Be cautious here) One noteworthy picture among hundreds is: Click Here

Wikipedia
- The free user edited online encyclopedia has a great write up on Katrina, with lots of charts, pictures, information and comparisons.

We'll try to post more later .....
Please pray for mercy and grace for all of the people affected by this storm.
